The creation of the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 1972, followed by the construction of a modern medical center in 1976, established Greenville/Pitt County as a regional health care center in Eastern North Carolina. Emergence as a major medical center has required the constant creation and expansion of services and new facilities to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding regional population.
